CAMUS Albert (1913-1960)
Signed autograph ticket and signed typewritten letter addressed to Georges ADAM S.l., 10 May 1956 and 7 December 1956, 1 page in-12 on engraved paper and 1 page in-8 on letterhead from Librairie Gallimard NRF. Signed typewritten letter to George Adam. Testimony of Camus' spontaneous support wherever freedom is repressed. Courtesy reply from Camus, a member of the NRF reading committee, to a colleague about one of his books: "... I loved it as you are kind enough to wish, and I loved it in manuscript since I am one of those who had it taken by Gallimard...". The book thus evoked is either L'Épée dans les reins or Le Sang de César, by the same author, published respectively in 1947 and 1956 by Gallimard. He thanks George Adam for his participation, probably in a meeting in favor of Hungary. The Moscow repression of the Hungarian insurrection is very recent: on November 3, 1956, 2000 Russian tanks invaded Budapest, without France and the other Western democracies thinking of interposing themselves: "... Hard as the idea of the solitude in which we left the Hungarian fighters to die may be, the regrouping that took place in Europe nevertheless gives a kind of meaning to their desperate fight. It is simply a matter of helping the Hungarian nation to live free without having to make new and bloody sacrifices...". At the time of writing, Camus has already made himself known twice, first by responding to Imre Nagy's radio appeal to writers around the world on the day of the invasion, and then by giving a speech at the French student meeting on 23 November (quoted by Roger Quillot in Essais, La Pléiade, pp. 1779-1782).
