Signed autograph letter addressed to Mr DYNAM. S.l.n.d., 1 page in-8 in blue ink on "NRF" letterhead. Unpublished letter, of great interest, on 19th century literature. Camus, a fervent admirer of the Russian classics, evokes the taste of the great authors for digression, without this trait of writing detracting from the intensity of the characters and the quality of the story: "[...] It is a modern dream to want to reduce the hero of a novel to his behaviour alone. There is not a single great novel work where the hero does not explain himself and sometimes at length, when it is not the author himself who speaks. The greatest novel that I know War and Peace has hundreds of pages of essays. That doesn't stop Natasha Rostov, Bezukhov or Prince Andrei from having great romantic intensity. Neither Melville (not even in the admirable Billy Budd), nor Cervantes, nor Balzac, nor Dickens, nor the French classical novelists have deprived themselves of the necessary explanations... It is a fascinating subject, by the way, and one on which there would be much to say [...]".
