MANUSCRIPT autograph signed "Chs Chaillé-Long" of a letter to the editor of the London newspaper The Standard, December 1, 1890; 5 pages in-4; in English. The explorer's response to Henry M. STANLEY's attacks. Following errors about him in an issue of Le Matin, reproduced in The Standard, the victim of H.M. STANLEY's "vulgar and ridiculous pretensions" addresses corrective remarks to the London editor. Former chief of staff of General GORDON in the Sudan, he quotes a letter from the General to the New York Herald and the Royal Geographical Society recalling the discoveries that Chaillé-Long made, in 1874, "at the risk of his life". He wonders why these facts were not given the importance they deserved; Stanley's claims prevailed among the general public, but not among scientific societies who found his writings "sensational and suspicious"? He quotes with indignation a boastful statement by this "lumpy pedestrian", who has the blood of countless helpless savages on his hands... Then he gives an excerpt from a letter from Sir Richard BURTON, who believes that Chaillé-Long will never be recognized for his part in solving the mystery of the Nile: he has against him the jealousy of Colonel GRANT, the ignorance of the English public, and the wish of the Royal Geographical Society not to disturb Africa... Finally, he recalls the primordial role he played in 1882, during the bombing, destruction and occupation of Alexandria... 2 L.A.S. in French, Paris and Marseille 1890 (5 p. in-8), to a consul and Mr. Hippeau.
