COCTEAU Jean
L.A.S. "Jean Cocteau",[end of 1938], to "My dear friends"; 2 pages in-4. Message to his actors, or call to the theatre people and the public, when his play The Terrible Parents is threatened with a ban. Created on November 14, 1938 for the Ambassadors, the play Les Parents terribles had provoked a controversy, and the Paris City Council threatened to ban its performances. On January 4, 1939, the piece was transported to Les Bouffes-Parisiens, a great success.] "I have always worked for you. You've always fought for me. We are a common cause. When, despite your masters, the city council decides that my play is dangerous, not only does it deliberately make a mistake and wait for the freedom of the theatre, but it also thinks you are fools. This scandal is the first blow of a shameful offensive that would suppress, at the origin and in its entirety, the work of our Classics. They have all experienced these hypocritical obstacles and they are surviving. Help them, help me, help us. Don't let yourself be bothered by tricks. I accept, if necessary, a court that will judge the dangers that Terrible Parents represent for young people. If our time considers a play that deals with all noble and eternal feelings immoral, it is because we are threatened with censorship and the great method of achieving equality from below"....
