SAINT-SIMON Louis de Rouvroy, duc de (1675-1755) duc et pair, mémorialiste
L.A. (minute), [Madrid 28 January 1722, to Cardinal GUALTERIO]; 1 page in4 (apocryphal signature added). Beautiful unpublished letter, at the time of his embassy in Spain to ask for the hand of the Infante in the name of Louis XV. He answered by the last letter to the main points of the last dispatch of His Eminence, about "the invest [iture] of Naples for the general and of the abbot TEN CIN and his employer for the private individual" [it is about the investiture of Charles VI, the Spaniards having to evacuate the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily by virtue of the treaty of 1720 between Spain and the allies]. He is delighted "that my mending with Mr. le C[ardina] l DUBOIS may be of some satisfaction to V.E. My [first] care on arriving in Paris, where I cannot hope before Pasques, will be to cultivate the friendship that V.E. will have. I have been kind enough to link with so much care and skill between Mr. Le Cl de ROHAN and Moy and to seek with him all possible means to serve in all and by all V.E. De quoy I will give him a very special account. I am busy with the visits of more than 50 Greats of Spain and of a 12th of Ch[evaliers] of the Golden Fleece to complete at the most the two ceremonies of my children [Saint-Simon had obtained for them the Golden Fleece] that I can only for today more by begging her to be persuaded that I feel to the bottom of my heart the so obliging terms of the confidence of which she honours me "... PROVENANCE Former collection of Count Claude de FLERS, sale Sovereigns and Princes of France, 27 March 2007, n° 164.
