Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
+ autograph MANUSCRIPT (11 and 2 lines), in margin of a text dictated to LAS CASES and entirely crossed out, [Saint Helena 1816 ?]; with autograph dedication signed by LAS CASES; 2 pages oblong in-8 (cut out of a larger sheet). Manuscript of Napoleon for his memoirs, collected by the author of the Memorial of St. Helena. This fragment, at the head of which Las Cases noted "written by Napoleon in Longwood on the Italian campaigns", concerns the situation of the Directory before the coup d'état of 18 fructidor (4 September 1797), which preceded the peace of Campo-Formio. Napoleon wrote in his own hand, in the margin of the crossed-out dictation: "The most intriguing and dangerous emigrants returned. They were scratched with money. ...] The Directory soon realised that it was on the verge of a precipice [...] it wanted neither levellers nor royalists. It adopted the system known as "de la bascule"...". Las Cases dedicates this relic "to Mr. Taylor - Passy 20 January 1825 Cte de Las Cases".
