L.A.S. "P. Daniel Ev. d'Avranches", Caen 6 November 1694; 3 pages in-4. On a case of a debauched priest accused of spells. His knowledge of the case of the three persons accused of spells, detained in the prisons, came to him by several means, "the ones by confession, or by means relative to confession, the others by the examinations I made of the accused, by various reports that were made to me, & by the interviews I had with Mr. de Glatigny, Lieutenant Criminal of Avranches "... Sticking to the examinations and confrontation which he has made, " it seemed to me with a great deal of verisimilitude, that the first source of this affair, as of most of the other similar ones, is debauchery, & that the Priest, in order to abuse these two creatures, has put into use the means which have caused all this scandal. I am convinced that in these means, which appear supernatural, there is much charlatanism on the part of the Priest, & much simplicity & illusion on the part of the woman, & even more on the part of the girl, which I do not assure that there is nothing beyond. I have not recognized that in all this there has been any other malice, other than the enterprise of suborning these two unfortunate women. What is advanced concerning the other evils is without proof, and the most important facts that are articulated in this process are not proven, or are proven faithfully, and do not provide sufficient material to support a definite judgment. I have found some articles in the lectures which have been presented to me to be unsuitable to the honour of the Church and of my character, and contrary to the knowledge I have. So I did not believe that I should sign these monographs, without deleting these articles "...
