GIDE André (1869-1951)
Les poésies d'André Walter, signed manuscript of one of Gide's first texts, 1892. Autograph manuscript, the only one in verse of his entire work, of 40 and 51 pages, that is to say 91 pages in-12 rebacked with vellum paper and bound in a large volume in-4. Binding signed by m. albinhac. Jansenist purple morocco, smooth spine, slipcase. Spine faded. This complete manuscript presents two successive states of the Poésies d'André Walter : - The first state, bound in the second, bearing in Pierre Louÿs' hand on the title page "Gide. Vers" in purple ink. 51 p. handwritten on 48 ff. in-12 re-wrapped and a page of proofs titled "XV Le Parc"; - The second state, bound at the head, which was used for the printing of the collection and titled by Gide "Les Poésies d'André Walter (itinéraire symbolique)". 40 p. on 25 leaves numbered 1 to 24, written on both sides. These leaves contain the XXI pieces of the collection, with important corrections and autograph variants. Each poem is abundantly corrected, some are repeated on successive sheets with numerous other corrections. Some pages give the themes of certain pieces, and the last leaves offer poems that do not appear in the collection. The final leaf contains "Novembre" which only appears in the complete works under the false title of "Poésies diverses"... This manuscript was used for the printing of the original edition of the collection in 1892. Some pieces (I. II. VI. VII. XII. XIV. XV) had previously appeared in reviews, and piece XVIII in La Conque of January 11, 1892. In 1930, Gide wrote: "I reread with pleasure some of these Poems [...]. I wrote almost all of them in less than eight days, shortly after the publication of the Cahiers, which explains their title, and this attribution to an imaginary André Walter, even though he had already died in me. Exhibition André Gide, Bibliothèque Nationale, 1970, n° 143.
