"I cannot leave with your good mother: too many reasons keep me here. It will therefore be a little later. I am dining tomorrow at Mrs. Marliani's and I will explain it all to her... Tuesday evening [1843 ?] The gilder has made a mistake in the dimensions and is going to redo "the border of the St. Anne" [The Education of the Virgin, a picture painted in Nohant in 1842, and which Delacroix gave to George Sand; now in the Eugène Delacroix National Museum]. "Since he is doing it again, we can make it more manageable by having him remove the work on the sides which is completely useless for the effect and by having him add some ornaments. Tell him as soon as possible to suspend until further notice and come as soon as you can discuss it with me. [...] Shout your name through the door when you come to the studio"... [Around 1845?]. "You flane, you have fun but you waste your time and your youth. Here comes my kid. Painting is not done with a gun in your hand and across fields, unless you adopt the landscape at the expense of history. However I claim you and very seriously you must come back. You will hunt in your dreams like Pistolet [Nohant's dog]: that is all I want to promise you. You would be too late and you would undoubtedly fall short of your debut. And he signs: "Eug. Delacroix your teacher". January 2, 1851. "Dear friend, come and dine with me on Sunday. You will find Pierret the father, Riesener & some old friends of mine. We will talk about painting all evening and you will give me news of your good mother"...
