SISLEY ALFRED (1839-1899).
L.A.S. "A. Sisley", Moret-sur-Loing 13 January 1895, to a friend [Auguste RENOIR ?]; 1 page and a quarter in-8 (slight cracking at the folds). About the Caillebotte bequest. He has received "clippings from the Argus where the Caillebotte bequest is mentioned. Since the bequest is no longer accepted in full, that there is a compromise, that a certain number of paintings will be eliminated, there will therefore be a jury? In these conditions, it seems to me that each artist should be consulted; what do you think? If my idea seems right to you, talk about it to your friends in the Fine Arts and the Press"... [Gustave CAILLEBOTTE (1848-1894) had bequeathed his collection of Impressionist paintings to the State in the following terms: "As I want this gift to be accepted and to be accepted in such a way that the paintings will not go to an attic or a provincial museum, but to the Luxembourg and later to the Louvre, it is necessary that a certain time elapse before the execution of this clause until the public, I do not say understands, but admits this painting. This time may be twenty years at most. [...] I ask Renoir to be my executor"... However, the State initially refused the bequest, before authorizing the National Museums to select the paintings deemed worthy of inclusion in the Musée du Luxembourg; only half of them were chosen, including five paintings by Sisley (now in the Musée d'Orsay)].
