SOUTINE Chaïm (1893-1943).
L.A.S. "Soutine", Thursday [ca. 1920?], to Eugène DESCAVES; half page in-8. Rare letter to one of his very first collectors. "To my great regret I am prevented from coming to dinner and ask you to excuse me hoping to have the pleasure of seeing you again. I am indeed yours"... [Eugène DESCAVES (1863-1934) was a singular figure among collectors. He was the brother of the writer Lucien Descaves. Police commissioner in Paris, he was an active collector, like his colleague Léon Zamaron, but was not very generous financially, sometimes even paying for his protection to artists. He bought several paintings from Soutine when the latter was just starting out, such as Still Life with a Lamp (1915-1916)].
