Most of the leaves are written on both sides in blue ink, and crossed out with a red pen or pencil; they show erasures and corrections; they are paginated 179bis, 183bis/18513, 1848/1859, 18428, 18511/186. This is an early version of the bombing scene (Romans, Pléiade, t. IV, p. 316 ff.) In 1944, in the middle of the night, when Montmartre is bombed, Ferdinand, Lili and other tenants crowd into the lodge of the concierge, Mme Toiselle. Hortense and Delphine are fainting, Ferdinand is summoned to treat them: "Doctor, please! Fat Normance is awakened by the cries: "But he's still sleeping, the enormous one, snoring! I have to break down the door too [...] All the effort will start again - everyone has to push it open [...] His whole face is dripping [...] Ah, but he's much paler [...] My head against my chest, I press my ear there, the good one... I don't want to confuse my own noises, a baccanal of buzzing... Oh, the scruples of me! Clinical! [...] I convulse with pain under his blows [...] Pirame starts to scream... Ouaah ouaah ouaah "...
