STENDHAL (1783-1842).
L.A.S. " Lecœur Ss Lt ", B[runswick] July 10 [1807], to his sister Pauline BEYLE in Grenoble; 3 pages in-4, address with postal mark No. 51 Grande- Armée (tear by broken seal without touching the text, small crack repaired). Letter to his sister, signed with a fanciful pseudonym, two days after the peace of Tilsitt. [Henri Beyle was then assistant to the commissioners of war of the Grand Army, stationed in Brunswick]. "It is probable, my dear friend, that peace will be made. At this great time what will become of me? Will I remain in Germany with the troops who will probably remain there for subsistence, will I return to France; finally, will I be employed in the expedition of the Great Indies? One forgets people who go so far, otherwise I would not hate a long-distance journey. Of all my dead passions, that of seeing new things is the only one that remains. I am very well in B[runswick] and I am often bored there. I certainly would not be bored by war in Turkey. All this is a possibility. Mr. D[aru] will leave me in a corner, to appear docile I will have to stay there. He would like "my big daddy" to write a little letter to Martial [Daru] "who would write 2 lines to Z. It is the only way to fix the attention of this man who has so many things in his head. I wanted to have the kindness to talk to you for a moment before a big formal dinner where I cannot miss. It's two hours of boredom. Why don't you write to me, I'm not asking you for reasons, no excuses, just write me what you're thinking, what you're doing that day. Why do you want us to be dead to each other before the fatal end. If I go to Egypt and am killed there, you will blame yourself for this cruel silence. Ask for money, which I definitely cannot do without". He adds on the sheet of address: "Nothing new pr the peace. The king of Sweden starts again the g[uer]re on the 19 Jet". General Correspondence, t. I, p. 606 (n° 279).
