COCTEAU Jean - Lot 59
COCTEAU Jean Indirect criticism test. The Secular Mystery - Fine Arts considered as an assassination. Preceded by an introduction by Bernard Grasset (Paris, Bernard Grasset,[1932]); in-8 paperback. Collective edition, and in part original (Le Mystère laïc: essai d'étude indirecte had been published by Les Quatre Chemins in 1928), printed on paper "Edita" after the printing of 2682 copies in the collection "Pour mon Plaisir"; photographic frontispiece reproducing a painting by Giorgio de CHIRICO. Completed printing dated April 13, 1932; 16th edition on cover. Drawing and sending to Jean Marais. On the false title page, a beautiful black ink drawing depicting a young man reading, his head bent over, accompanied by an autographed letter signed: "au Choeur à Blancharmure à Michel à Jeanot son Jeanot". Cocteau had met Jean Marais in 1937, during an audition of Raymond Rouleau's students for OEdipe-Roi; he then entrusted the young actor with the role of the Choir. Their love story, which will last more than 25 years, had just begun. In this dedication, Cocteau lists some of the roles played by Jean Marais: after the Choir of OEdipe-Roi, Blancharmure in Les Chevaliers de la Table ronde (1937), and Michel in Les Parents terribles (1938).
