COCTEAU Jean - Lot 62
COCTEAU Jean 5 autograph MANUSCRITS, a partially autographed manuscript, and a TAPUSCRIT with autograph annotations, The Computer Machine,[1932]; 12 pages in various formats, and a bound notebook in-4 (27 x 21 cm) of 65 sheets plus cover. Interesting together on the genesis of The Infernal Machine. Typewritten from Act I. The green cover is written by Cocteau in pencil and ink, with the original title: "The Mystery of Oedipus and the Sphinx", and the subtitle: "Mystery in three acts and an Epilogue"; both have been deleted and replaced by: "The Infernal Machine (or life of Oedipus) mystery in four acts". On the top right, this autograph letter to Charles de NOAILLES: "Charles, forgive me for sending you this mess - but your Jean comes out of the heart". At the top of the typewritten text, Cocteau added in pencil the title of the act: "THE GHOST", and this note: "Where I wrote: ZIZI in capital characters - give TIRESIA". Many corrections and additions to the black ink are by Jean Desbordes. Drawing with autograph notes, in black ink (21 x 27 cm), representing the "first day scenery" and Oedipus' encounter with the Sphinx, with the title "The beautiful and the beast Mystery in 2 parts"; two small sketches in the margins for the Sphinx device, and Oedipus' head; and various notes. Autograph manuscript of the epigraph (1 page in-4): Cocteau copied Baudelaire's text. Autograph draft of the Dedication (3 pages in-4) to Charles and Marie-Laure de NOAILLES, abundantly missed and corrected. Cocteau talks about his work with Christian Bérard (the signatures of both their names have been crossed out). Partly autographed manuscript of the Prologue (3 pages and a quarter in-4, right edge a little freed), by Jean Desbordes with corrections and autograph additions by Cocteau, who notably wrote the title: "Prologue[projected on a bright screen before the action crossed out] recited in the dark by the shadow mouth before the action, after the 3 blows".
