COCTEAU Jean - Lot 79
COCTEAU Jean Enigma. Poem by Jean Cocteau ([Paris], Les Éditions des Réverbères,[completed: March 8, 1939]); in-8 plate (198 x 105 mm) of 16 ff. n. ch., brocaded, uncut, unheated, under cover engraved on filled Chinese paper. Original edition of this extremely rare booklet, entirely engraved with a dry point, one of the 7 luxury copies, with the very rare filled jacket. It is illustrated with an original full-page engraving by the author. One of the 7 head copies, numbered 5 in blue pencil, on Tibetan paper by hand or "Japanese Mulberry tree" (May-Xo), justified by the poet of a star in blue pencil. Edition entirely engraved and printed on the hand press of the Editions des Réverbères, whose announced circulation at the time of justification is 130 copies, plus 7 luxury copies. This entirely engraved brochure was not put on the market, but distributed to subscribers of the Editions des Réverbères; it is of the greatest rarity. A publisher's prospectus advertised a circulation of 120 copies plus 7 luxury copies, while the finished print indicates 130 and 7 copies. In any case, it seems that the circulation was much lower than the figures announced. Attached is the prospectus of Éditions des Réverbères, on red paper, announcing Énigme.
