PEYREFITTE ROGER (1907-2000) - Lot 99
PEYREFITTE ROGER (1907-2000) L.A.S. "Roger Peyrefitte", Paris 7 January 1947, to Jean COCTEAU; 2 pages in-8 filled with a tiny blue ink writing at his address 15, avenue Hoche (tab track). Beautiful and long letter after reading the poem La Crucifixion. "My dear friend, A day when you were seen, spoken to, hosted by you, is to be marked with a white stone. And if it is one of the first days of the year, we can only see a happy omen [...] You are right not to like this term of "magician" that we give you: magicians are false magicians and, like Simon, they end up breaking their nose. You are the magician, the last magician of our time, the magician and the king, and the star that accompanies your name, and which is your star, has become ours. Could I not tell you all this, not only in memory of those short moments spent with you, but in the delights present, and which will often be renewed, of that admirable Crucifixion that I have just read? Crucifixion or apotheosis? Each word, each station, is rich in thoughts, feelings, sensations, the brilliance of the French language and the French genius. This is the first book you have published, since I have had the great pleasure of knowing you, just as Beauty and the Beast was your first film and The Two-headed Eagle your first play. What a pleasure for me to have found, always equal to himself, always incomparable, in three new masterpieces, the author of so many masterpieces that I admired. Excuse me, dear friend, so many compliments. I wanted to have made them for you at least once and from a distance; for you are so simple and so above all that it would be blushing to hit them closely".... He adds that Les Parents terribles was, "in Milan, the greatest theatre success we have seen in several years"... Etc.
