COCTEAU Jean - Lot 109
COCTEAU Jean Autograph MANUSCRIT, Radio texts on Yvonne de Bray,[1948]; 3 pages in-4 filled in pencil, on the false title and the last two pages of an exhibition catalogue (small in-4 paperback). Draft of a tribute to the actress Yvonne de Bray. It is written in pencil on pages of the exhibition catalogue of the painter and decorator MAYO: Mayo. Preface by Jean-Louis Barrault. Poem by Jacques Prévert (Paris, Galerie Dina Vierny. 1948; ex. n° 53 on Arches vellum). On the back cover, Cocteau wrote in red pen: "Radio texts on Yvonne de Bray". These texts on the actress Yvonne de BRAY (1876-1954) were written for the release of the film Les Parents terribles in December 1948. "We said too much: I don't care about it like I did in the year 40. In 1940, there was no more mocking. At the beginning of the war, I lived on a small sailboat against a barge where Yvonne de Bray lived. I was his neighbour and his host. Jean Marais was a soldier in the North. To distract us from the anguish, I imagined writing a comedy in which Yvonne de Bray would play the role of a great actress (she would not have much trouble)... Christian Bérard would dress and decorate. So it was done. ...] A pretext to put back on the stage an artist equal to Réjane who treats her genius so much from below her leg, that she would never show herself in public if she wasn't forced to do so. I had erased myself as much as I could. It was only a question of highlighting an astonishing woman whose classmates wonder by what secret means she manages to make people laugh and move. Obviously we miss on the radio her face as overwhelming as that of Madame Colette, that eye whose blue is brighter than scarlet, but we still have the most beautiful voice in the world, warm, velvety, broken, raspy, strong, sweet, and jumping with her feet together in the heart. I believe that Mrs. Yvonne de Bray is the greatest actress of our time"... Etc.
