COCTEAU Jean - Lot 131
COCTEAU Jean Autograph MANUSCRIT signed "Jean",[1954]; 1 page and a half large in-fol. (260 x 460 mm) in black ink, on two sheets, signed on the back of the first sheet, with this indication on the back of the second sheet: "For the disc". Reflections on poetic inspiration. This text was intended to accompany the release of the 25 cm vinyl disc Poèmes de Jean Cocteau dits par l'auteur, published by Pathé-Marconi in 1954. Cocteau read several of his works there, including L'Ange Heurtebise, a poem on Manolete and excerpts from his theatre. "It's not enough to have an idea. But this idea must have made us - occupying us - haunting us - unbearable and cumbersome for us to expel it and start living a life of its own. The poet's role is "moral [...] To write, as far as the poet is concerned, is to change from night to light. It's like putting night in broad daylight. Nothing is more complex or mysterious than this work. ...] In short, our profession (and PICASSO told me: The profession is what you can't learn) our profession is an archaeologist's profession. Since it should not be said inspiration but expiration - that our works pre-exist and that our enterprise is to search our soul". The cinematograph and the record, by their large circulation, multiply for the poet "the chances of reaching a few people whom the poet did not meet in the past or met in the long run and after his death. The struggle that the poet waged during his lifetime is a paradox because he is posthumous. France has always killed its poets. The list is long of his victims. And that's a good thing. A poet must die several times before he can live. In truth, it is when the poet is dead that he lives and if he lives he is still a little dead. That's why his struggle is so hard. The work that eats it and wants to get rid of it is the strongest. It requires the help of a weaker person and despises him"... Etc.
