COCTEAU Jean - Lot 137
COCTEAU Jean Original DESIGN signed "Jean Cocteau",[Guillaume Apollinaire], 1958; lead pencil drawing signed below right, 25.5 x 20 cm (framed; scotch trace at the top of the sheet). Beautiful portrait of Guillaume Apollinaire with a bandaged forehead. Bust portrait of Guillaume APOLLINAIRE, after his hospitalization in May 1916; he had been wounded by a shrapnel wound on his forehead two months earlier, and had undergone a trepanation, which explains the presence of the bandage tied around his skull. Cocteau faithfully reproduced, forty years apart, the expression of the wounded poet. Apollinaire is represented here in close-up, the line stopping at the top of the military costume. Jean Cocteau changed the regiment number on the legs of the soldier's pea jacket collar (98 instead of the 96th infantry regiment, where Apollinaire had been transferred at his request in 1915). A variant of this drawing was reproduced in Les Lettres françaises of 13 November 1958, on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of Apollinaire's death. Exhibition: Jean Cocteau (Baden-Baden, Staatliche Kunsthalle, 1989, n° 314). Origin: André BERNARD collection.
