COCTEAU Jean - Lot 138
COCTEAU Jean 11 L.A.S., 2 autograph MANUSCRITS and a corrected typewriter, 1957-1962; 19 pages in various formats, and 113 pages in-4, under cardboard folder decorated by Cocteau with coloured pencils. Interesting file concerning the Patmos oratorio. Cocteau had written the libretto L'Apocalypse ou Patmos in 1952 for the German composer Paul HINDEMITH, who finally gave up setting it to music; Cocteau then entrusted it to the composer Yves CLAOUÉ (1927-2001); Patmos was premiered on May 3, 1962 in the royal chapel of the Château de Versailles, but the score seems to have disappeared. You will have a nice surprise - but I advise you to look for your themes and timbres without writing any definitive melodic lines. Currently the text is very confusing to read".... 23 April 1958: "Naturally, intermediate music must play the leading role - and even an instrument solo can alternate with a vocal solo. Put in the form of choirs - women and men - what seems legitimate to you for the balance of your work. I let you free"... But the creation was a failure, and the work would never be published. May 6, 1962: "Don't think for a minute that I blame you for our Titanic. It was my job to tell you what to do to keep our ship from sinking. An oratorio is not
