LOUYS Pierre (1870-1925) - Lot 149
LOUYS Pierre (1870-1925) 3 L.A.S. "P.L." or "Pierre",[1909-1915], to Claude FARRÈRE; 10 pages in-8 or in-12, 2 envelopes. [1909]. An amusing letter in which Louÿs pleasantly recounts Anatole FRANCE's adventure with the actress Jeanne BRINDEAU, "the exputain", who became his mistress during a tour of South America; rumours are circulating about a possible marriage, but Mrs de Caillavet, the master's mistress in title, awaits her on her return: "What the immortal old man knows, he did exactly what the genial Mr. Cryptogame, character of Töppfer, if Mr. Cryptogame had known the railways. On arrival, he remained locked in his compartment for an hour and a half without daring to go down. Shortly afterwards, the fierce Elvire, miraculously retaking Mr. Cryptogame, kidnapped him from his lands in Guyenne where she kept him captive... Thursday evening[9 January 1914]: he was detained by the Sorbonne, which "transported itself into my office with a phonograph as big as a pestle hammer. It was to record my voice for the "Archives of the Word". We have fun as much as we can at the Faculty of Arts".... Wednesday[12.VIII.1915]. "I just spent the night with Damia, Paul Iribe, Jeanne Iribe, Colette, Willy and Musidora"; he thought he was angry with DAMIA but "she shouted "Pierre !" in a voice so joyful that I am no longer reminded why I was at odds with her"...
