MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS (1756-1791)
MUSICAL autograph MANUSCRIT for the Serenade in D major K.185/167a; 1 oblong sheet small in-4 (16.2 x 21.7 cm) front and back, under a blue canvas flap folder, case.
Interesting fragment of a Mozart Youth Serenade.
This Serenade (or rather Serenata to use Mozart's title)[called "Antretter"], for 2 flutes (or oboes), 2 horns, 2 trumpets and strings, was composed in Vienna in July and August 1773 - Mozart was 17 years old -, probably as Finalmusik for students at the University of Salzburg, probably commissioned to celebrate the end of her studies by Judas Thaddäus von Antretter (born in 1753), son of the chancellor of the Salzburg region, who was a friend of the Mozart family; it includes 7 movements, to which the K step must also be attached in the introduction.189/167b.
In this charming work, the 2nd and 3rd movements, with their important solo violin part and F major key, form Mozart's first violin concerto in a way within the Serenade.
This leaflet, numbered in pencil "17", is attached to the 2nd movement, Andante, at 3/4; it presents 14 bars (bars 40 to 53) (Neue Mozart Ausgabe, IV, 12/2, p. 88-89), i. e. the conclusion of the exhibition section, and the majority of the passage from link to recap. The orchestral texture is particularly exquisite here: a beautiful cantilena for solo violin, on gently pulsating strings.
On a 10-line paper (Tyson No. 31), Mozart traced a system of 8 staves, and noted in brown ink the eight parts, all active in this passage: solo violin (or "Violino principale"), violin I, violin II, viola (viola), oboe I, oboe II, horns, bass.
The complete manuscript of the Serenade had been sold on 25-26 February 1975 by the firm Stargardt in Marburg (Kat. 605, No. 808); it was then dismembered; it had 58 leaves, of which only 11 were recorded by Alan Tyson (Mozart Wasserzeichen-Katalog, Neue
Mozart Ausgabe, X/33, 1-2), who mentioned none for Andante; although some other leaves have since been found, we have not r
