WOLFF CHRISTIAN (1679-1754) - Lot 254
WOLFF CHRISTIAN (1679-1754) L.A.S. "Christianus Wolfius" with drawing, "Hale Saxonum"[Halle (Saxony-Anhalt)] August 18, 1743, to René-Antoine Ferchault of RÉAUMUR, "Vir Generosissime atque Celeberrime"; 4 pages in-4 (small slits at the edges and fold, restored); in Latin. An important scientific letter, which was read at the Academy of Sciences by Réaumur on 4 December 1743, as indicated in a note at the top. He thanks the report of the illustrious Academy of Sciences for the year 1740, and announces volumes II and IV of his book on natural law[Jus natura, methoda scientifica pertractum]. He hopes that the turbulent situation inside Alsace will not delay his sending, and that peace will soon come, because "inter arma enim silent Musæ"[in time of war, the Muses are silent]... Volume VII of the History of Insects of Réaumur has reached him well. Wolff comments at length on the reproduction by binary fission, treated in Volume VI, with a pen drawing of a vase. Because of the indivisibility of the soul, this discovery raises a metaphysical problem for which Wolff proposes a solution... At the top of the letter, RÉAUMUR's autograph note: "a repdre pour l'Academie".
