Tancredi, autograph manuscript signed. S.d., 1 f. de garde bearing a dedication dated March 14, 1930, 38 ff. written on the front in black and violet ink (2 ff. bear on the back crossed out verses) in a school notebook of 46 ff. of vellum paper lined and marbled, bound half green percaline with corners in cold-stamped Bradel. A precious, complete and original autograph manuscript of Léon-Paul Fargue's first masterpiece, linking symbolism and unborn surrealism. On the guard page of this manuscript, Léon-Paul Fargue himself has retraced the bibliographical genesis of his book: "This little "lyric novel" was composed in 1893, in class, and confiscated, then returned with emotion by my teacher, Mr. Vautier. It was published for the first time in Pan, a Franco-German review, in 1895, with illustrations by Launay, Bottini, Delcourt, who have since died, and "published in volume" in 1911, by Valery Larbaud". The text had a certain resonance, as we shall see, but Léon-Paul Fargue, despite numerous requests, always hesitated to have it republished. In 1911, his friend Valery Larbaud took the initiative, without warning the author, to have Pan's text printed at his own expense in a booklet of 212 copies. He finally agreed to give an edition in 1943 by Gallimard, but in a version cut out of several chapters. The present manuscript corresponds to the complete version, as it appeared in Pan and published by Larbaud. "He was several times such a handsome young man that women expressly wanted him to write". The work, "petit roman lyrique", consists of six prose texts and two series of poems. It is in a way a novel of intellectual and sensual learning. In the second chapter, Tancredi spends the night with a young prostitute whom he leaves in the morning: "The dawn with its indolent chandelier declared the unfortunate little sleeper.
