JACOB Max (1876-1944) - Lot 91
JACOB Max (1876-1944) Signed autograph letter addressed to Kees VAN DONGEN. Presbytery of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, July 5, 1921, 1 page in-4 in ink on paper, envelope preserved. Very nice letter. "Dear old man. I am far away. Thank you! My dear friend, thank you for thinking of me morally far from Paris. I work like a workhorse. Your party will be very nice and I regret a little to be deprived of it. I regret a little, very little. There are too many parties in my life and too little work. I'm making up for it now. I'm in a garden between a presbytery that looks like the thatched cottage of Trianon and a Basilica in the middle of the field, which passes for the most beautiful Romanesque church in France. It doesn't matter to me. I do prose and verses and as there is a pilgrimage here, I follow the services which are in pure Gregorian chant, and the processions". He sends his compliments to him and his wife, in the name of "this old friendship that you know and that dates back a long time", and reminds him of the time when "Clément Vautel was the artistic director of Le Rire and we used to meet in the antechamber you in boots and me, God knows how...". If they think of the poor, the parish priest of Saint-Benoît "does not lack misery to relieve [...]".
