PICABIA Francis (1879-1953)
Fifty-two mirrors, signed autograph manuscript. 1912-1917, 40 manuscripts of 27 poems including 1 unpublished and 3 signed on 44 pages in ink, 15 in-4, and 29 in-8 on different papers. Some of the poems may include up to 5 manuscripts of different versions. 22 manuscripts present the final version of the poems (with a number in blue pencil) and 18 manuscripts of the unpublished versions, with variants as well as strikethrough verses and numerous corrections. One of the manuscripts contains 8 general title essays for the collection with the dates 1912-1917. "... A wall of lies is watered Secretly like a tree Marked out in advance for a rendezvous Flaming lords Wait patiently for the favour Eager for your mission to frame it At the proper height in the wall Before the hypocrites lie All that is on Earth Far from the truth Is a hurricane of divine roads Like the light of paradise ...". A poem titled Simple is illustrated with a small original pencil drawing, it was not selected for publication despite a blue pencil number. Numerous poems appear on the paper at the head of the Hotel Brevoort in New York. The extremely rare edition of the first book Cinquante-deux miroirs, Francis Picabia's first poetic collection, will be published in Barcelona by Oliva de Vilanova. An exceptional manuscript set of more than half of the poems in Picabia's very first collection of poems, resolutely placed under the sign of Dada.
