PROUST Marcel (1871-1922)
Signed autograph letter addressed to BINET-VALMER. S.l., [May 1921], 6 pages in-12 in ink on paper, under midnight blue semi-marocco slipcase. Autograph letter signed to Jean-Auguste-Gustave Binet, known as Binet-Valmer, a Franco-Swiss writer close to right-wing veterans in the 1920s and an admirer of Marcel Proust. "Dear and great friend. You are too good to talk about me with this excess. Don't talk about me anymore. To defend myself from just reproaches mixed with your too indulgent praise [...] at the end of the 3rd volume of Sodom II, we see the evolution of a scene [...] all the inverts are Germans [...] There is only one fact on which we do not agree I do not believe that the war has destroyed but on the contrary developed inversion. I would add that those who were previously invested were often heroic soldiers. ...] But I have always exhausted my subjects, whatever they were. I don't like this one any more than Flaubert did with the characters in La Bovary. And alas, it's a thousand and a hundred thousand feet below the Bovary. But it's the fault of my talent, not of my subject. [...]». Portrait of Marcel Proust embedded in the box. Superb letter from Marcel Proust.
