SCHMIED FRANÇOIS-LOUIS (1873-1941) - VIGNY ALFRED DE (1797-1863)
Daphne. Paris, F.L. Schmied, 1924. In-4, taupe morocco, two silver plates in champlevé enamels embedded in the upper plate, joined in the centre of the plate to allow the decoration to develop, inner frame decorated with a black, brown scroll at the corners, lining and silk guards with large stylised foliage motifs, untrimmed, first cover plate, Plexiglas case (G. Cretté succ. de Marius Michel. - Enamels of Jean Goulden after F.-L. Schmied). This edition of the four letters of Daphne, due to the initiative of Doctor Amédée Baumgartner, was drawn up by F.-L. Schmied who designed the prescription and the ornamentation, engraved the plates on wood and printed 140 numbered and signed copies on his hand presses. Schmied's illustration consists of a cover, 49 coloured woodblocks, 5 of which are full-page, 25 headbands and end caps and 19 large ornamented letters, all of which are partly embellished with silver. Completed on Christmas Day 1924. First important book by Schmied. Copy no. 79, enriched with 2 leaves of the original model, each with an original gouache by Schmied, one with the large initial "L" historiated, typical of the book, the other with a superb large format gouache (148 x 180 mm). Each sheet is signed by the artist. Exceptional binding with a large enamel decoration by Jean Goulden.
