SCHMIED FRANÇOIS-LOUIS (1873-1941) - WILDE OSCAR (1854-1900) - Lot 174
SCHMIED FRANÇOIS-LOUIS (1873-1941) - WILDE OSCAR (1854-1900) Two tales. Paris, F.-L. Schmied, 1926. In-4, black morocco, both dishes entirely covered with black lacquer on metal, on the first large red, gold and eggshell geometric decoration, reminder on the second, black morocco lining bearing, embedded in each counterplate, a mat gold plate with red and black lacquered geometric decoration, black moire guards, untrimmed, cover and back, half morocco shirt, case (Paul Bonet, 1926). This edition of Deux contes d'Oscar Wilde, translated by Albert Savine, was prepared by F.-L. Schmied on the friendly initiative of Messrs. Louis Barthou, Jean Guiffrey, Jacques André, Charles Miguet and Frank Altschul. It is illustrated with colour compositions by F.-L. Schmied, who engraved and printed them on his hand presses. Apart from the cover illustration and the 5 woodblocks out of text, the edition is illustrated with 27 thin vertical bands in the first tale and 23 horizontal bands in the second, plus a starting letter for each tale and monochrome line ends. Far from being considered decorative by Schmied, these abstract banners are for him a true illustration, for which he gives the table and the caption at the end of each part. The illustration also includes 2 small woods and 4 vertical woods for the tables, and a small colour strip to finish printing. Edition of 150 copies on Arches vellum, signed and numbered from 1 to 150, and 12 collaborators' copies numbered from I to XII. Copy n° 140. Exceptional binding by Paul Bonet, decorated with lacquers executed by Damg-Bui after drawings by Paul Bonet himself. Damg-Bui, a lacquer painter, was one of the Indochinese who came to Paris to meet the demand for this decorative process, which was then in vogue. This binding, executed by Trinckevel, is listed in the Carnets de Paul Bonet, published by Claude Blaizot in 1981, No. 51, with this observation: "My only binding with the two lacquer plates, quite happy".
