APOLLINAIRE, Guillaume
Autograph letter signed "G." with two poems. Courmelois], June 23, 1915. 2 p. x 1 f. in-4 (26.5 x 20.8 cm). Autograph letter signed by Guillaume Apollinaire addressed to Louise de Coligny- Châtillon (Lou), dated June 23, 1915. It contains on the back, two poems C'est... and Oriande. Apollinaire is on the front and Lou is in Nancy with Toutou. He sends her two poems, asks for news of Toutou and gives some of his own. In the most moving part of the letter, the poet worries about his friend, so close to the front, and urges her to be careful in the face of danger: "It is true that death is less frightening than we once thought. It is true that death is less frightening than was once thought. The Japanese have taught us to despise death, or rather not to despise it but to be indifferent to it, for it is nothing but life, which cannot be lacking. " This is one of the famous letters to Lou, the great passion of Guillaume Apollinaire. After a few months of relationship and correspondence, she shuns him and refuses to separate from her other lover, Gustave Toutaint, nicknamed "Toutou". The break-up was consummated in March 1915, a few months before this letter, but their correspondence continued until 1916. Beautiful letter to Lou, accompanied by two poems by Guillaume Apollinaire. Honoré Champion, 2015, vol. 2, p. 514, letter no. 990. A few small marginal tears (with damage to the text), traces of folding.
