BRETON, André
Signed autograph manuscript. S. l., [ca. 1943]. 7 p. in-4 (28.1 x 21.6 cm). Signed autograph manuscript entitled "Lumière Noire". In this manuscript, free of any erasures or corrections, Breton vehemently addresses what he calls the "insatiable divinity of war": "I know all that today you are given and that you do not even have to bend down to take it. And yet what if I dared to speak of what you are denied? Once again you are there, haggard, filthy, smashing your big blue toys, which take turns being more and more numerous, more and more sophisticated, in a swarm of flies. You take the opportunity to say that having always existed you will always exist and I grant that nothing is as favourable to you as this philosophy of "eternal return" whose last word can only be for what purpose? ...] One of the newest aspects of this war is that the taste of war for war is being expressed in the open, on the opposite side to ours. " Lumière Noire is a founding text of Breton's thought. "In "Lumière Noire", Breton justifies his attitude: it is out of radical hostility to war and its values that he does not talk about it. One should not limit one's mental universe to this "insatiable divinity", but on the contrary dream of a better life" (Christine Dupouy, La question du lieu en poésie, 2006, p. 168). This text was first published in December 1943 in Le Monde libre, a periodical published in Montreal, and then in L'Arche (1945). It was also published in Arcane 17 enté d'Ajours in 1947. Important manuscript of this famous text by André Breton. PROVENANCE: Paris Sale, Christie's, April 28, 2008, lot 91. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Breton. OEuvres complètes, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, 1999, Tome III, p. 100-106. Small holes left by staples, some burrs.
