CÉLINE, Louis-Ferdinand - Lot 393
CÉLINE, Louis-Ferdinand Autograph manuscript for D'un Château l'autre. S. l., [ca. 1954-1957]. 18 p. in-4 (27 x 21 cm). These 18 pages on cream paper, written in ballpoint pen, foliated from 966 to 983, contain numerous cross-outs, additions and corrections. The cross-outs are neat: usually a single word or phrase is carefully crossed out. Celine often rewrites the word in question just above it. These pages correspond to pages 238 to 243 of the original edition published in 1957 by Gallimard. The handwritten text is quite close to the final text. Céline writes: "I'm bringing you up to date on these funny things... the total unity of Germany dates only from Hitler but not so much unified as that! the proof!... you have trains that to cross from Germany to Switzerland crossed the border six times, the same one, in not a quarter of an hour.... "This passage becomes in the published text: "I'm making you aware of these fuss... the total unity of Germany dates back to Hitler and not so much unified! the proof: you had trains that to cross from Germany to Switzerland crossed the border ten times, the same one, in not a quarter of an hour... " The numerous corrections reveal the stylistic approach of Céline, who reworks her texts at length: "We can see to what extent the work departs from the too widespread visions of Céline "speaking" her novels, or being carried away by a verbal torrent that he would not be able to master" (Henri Godard, D'un château l'autre; Nord; Rigodon, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, 1974, p. 977). First part of the German Trilogy, which will be completed by Nord (1960) and Rigodon (1969), D'un Château l'autre received an enthusiastic review and allowed Celine to make her return to the French literary scene. Important working manuscript, representative of Celine's writing style. PROVENANCE: Sale Paris, Neret-Minet, Tessier & Sarrou, April 3, 2013, lot 188. Traces of folds, minute marginal tears w
