CÉLINE, Louis-Ferdinand
Autograph manuscript for Nord. S. l., [ca. 1957-1959]. 4 p. and a half on 5 ff. in-4 (27 x 20.8 cm). Autograph manuscript of a complete chapter of Nord, "where Céline is perhaps at the top of her writing" (Pierre Seghers). These 4 and a half pages, written with a ballpoint pen, foliated from 847 to 851 correspond to the chapter that concludes a hysteria scene at the Zornhof manor where Frau Kretzer attacked Hitler's portrait in front of witnesses including Céline, his wife Lili and the actor La Vigue. The three Frenchmen find themselves alone (with the cat Bébert) wondering about the consequences that could follow for them from this scandal, but La Vigue ends up singing the Füher while squinting. The end of the passage presents some variations with the final text. Céline carefully crossed out and corrected her text and added a few lines: "We'll fight if it continues. - You're the greatest actor of the century! Adolf is a dirty loser! ["Dirty faggot!", crossed out by Celine.] - Yes! Yes! La Vigue! Lili approves... that's what it took... all it took... we talk nicely about things... and then we fall asleep. " This passage in the original edition becomes, 'We'll fight if it keeps up. - "You're the greatest comedian of the century... Adolf is just a gougnaff and a screamer! So is the Landrat!" Lili agrees with me... "Yes! Yes! Vigue! - Are you sure, Ferdine? - Yes, and I swear it! - So... So !..." So we talk nicely about things and other things... " Nord is the second part of the German Trilogy, started with D'un Château l'autre (1957) and finished by Rigodon (posthumous edition in 1969). Important working manuscript for Nord, "his most beautiful book since Voyage au bout de la nuit" (Roger Nimier). Holes left by staples, tiny marginal stains without affecting the text.
