CHAR, René
Autograph manuscript signed for Artine. Paris, September 22, 1930. 20 p. in 1 vol. in-8 (27 x 20 cm), blond half-maroquin with stripes, plates of navy blue paper imitating lizard, smooth spine, case edged with the same skin (Semet et Plumelle). Autograph manuscript signed by René Char, entitled Artine. It is accompanied by an autograph note signed on the first page: "Manuscript having belonged to Paul Éluard, until his death. R. C. March 1954". This is probably the manuscript that was used to print the book because it contains the annotations of the typographer in red pencil and graphite. On the second page is a passage not found in the printed edition. It is a small text of 8 lines that Char crossed out, except for the last line, which he circled: "Is this a butcher's shop? "A few pages later, René Char established his own bibliography in which he announces two works: L'Homme en question and Chemin des sources (in collaboration with Paul Éluard) which will not be published. Finally, the epigraph of Achim d'Arnim appears in the original edition that will appear in the Surrealist Editions, but not in the following ones. Paul Éluard and René Char meet in the fall of 1929. Jokingly, René Char had told Éluard that his poetry was too elegiac and that he was the Lamartine of Surrealism, a Lamartine without a Blade. Artine's name was found. This book is one of Char's first Surrealist texts (after Le Tombeau des secrets) and the only one to be published by Éditions surréalistes. "Finally, it should be noted - and this is a special case in Char's work - that the poet will not retouch Artine's poems when they reappear in Le Marteau sans maître. "(Valentin, Supplément d'âme.) Very beautiful manuscript of one of René Char's most famous texts, enriched with an autograph signed to Paul Éluard. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Mathieu, La Poésie de René Char, vol. I, Paris, 1988, p. 138-151.
