ELUARD, Paul
Meeting of 3 autographed letters and one typed letter signed. Paris et s. l., 1936-1948. 4 p. in-8 and in-12 (various sizes), 3 envelopes. Reunion of 3 autograph letters and a typewritten letter signed to Hans Bellmer. In a letter dated January 5, 1936, Éluard warmly congratulates Bellmer for his Doll: "It is a long time since I should have told you how much I admire everything you do, how much your work touches me. The latest photographs of your doll are great wonders. Never before has such a special, real life been given to a creation, a creature of the imagination. "Éluard repeats these compliments in another letter: "My dear Bellmer, I am very happy to finally have the Doll's Games, admirably coloured and with a frightening perfume. " From 1936 on, Éluard began to write several texts to accompany the Bellmer Dolls. In a letter dated April 8, 1940, when Éluard was mobilized as a lieutenant and Bellmer was interned at Camp des Miles, Éluard informed him of the progress of the project: "With Zervos, I chose many illustrations of you for Cahiers d'Art. " It was not until 1949 that Bellmer published Les Jeux de la Poupée. Illustrated with texts by Paul Éluard, with photos of the second Doll. - Enclosed: Paul Éluard's death notice, November 18, 1952, addressed to Hans Bellmer (1 p. in-4, envelope kept). A beautiful and important correspondence that allows us to retrace the genesis of the Jeux de la Poupée, Bellmer's masterful work, accompanied by Paul Éluard's texts. PROVENANCE: Paris Sale, Sotheby's, November 29, 2007, lot 186. Traces of folds, tears and missing text on a leaf, slightly burnished paper.
