An important set of 70 autograph manuscripts by Max Jacob. 8 sheets are illustrated with sketches in ink and pencil. These manuscripts, with few erasures, relate to the religious meditations of Max Jacob, who converted to Catholicism in 1915. For more than thirty years, he wrote a text every morning, sometimes at dawn, in the form of a spiritual reflection. The words of a deeply believing man flow from these texts: "Death. 7: 25 a.m.. Do not look at death as a pagan, for then it is terrible and abominable. ...] But if I look at death in the light of N.S.J.C., everything changes. I see life as a preparation for death and of two things one either I would have satisfied this examination and I have nothing to fear from God's judgment or I would not have satisfied and I can hope in the law which is the law of forgiveness and not one iota of which will be forgotten. Jacob uses this as a foundation for his own text, which is akin to a homily: "Let my body bend down to you above myself, for in me I will find you. You dwell in me, and if I forsake you, I forsake myself. " Jacob appears transfigured by faith: "I have spoken it as the Gospel! I repeated it with him. He who has faith will be saved.
