LOTI, Pierre
Meeting of signed autograph letters. S. l., 1913-1920 and n. d. 124 p. out of 73 ff. and 17 double ff. in-8 and in-12 (various sizes). Important correspondence from Pierre Loti to Jane Catulle Mendès: 90 signed autograph letters. He evokes his daily life at the front: "My friend, I have been all the time on mission at the front these days, that is why I have been slow to answer you. "And in another, he signs: "P. Loti (who had a narrow escape today, spotted by the dirty Krauts and well sprinkled with machine-guns). "The anxiety of a father is mixed with the impatience of a soldier: " My friend, like you, I have had no news of my son for eight days. And he is my only reason for living. As for me, I am serving in the arsenal, having not yet been able to obtain, despite my pressing requests, to go further. " At the end of the 1890s, Pierre Loti, then a lieutenant, commanded the gunboat Le Javelot, stationed on the waters of the Bidassoa in Hendaye. He fell in love with the Basque country and spent some time in the village of Ascain. He received many people there, including Jane Catulle Mendès, who stayed in Saint Jean de Luz. A deep friendship is born, "a friendship that is very much in love" (Alain Quella-Villéger, Pierre Loti: une vie de roman, 2019). Enclosed: - A woodcut portrait of Pierre Loti by Aubert. - A photographic portrait of Pierre Loti captioned "In memory of Pierre Loti, June 10, 1923". - A set of 24 telegrams, addressed to Jane Catulle Mendès: mainly to arrange a meeting. Traces of folds, marginal tears, some stains.
