[Paris, 1896]. 2 large volumes in-4 (34.8 x 28.7 cm), burgundy morocco, on the boards framed with 5 gilt fillets, spine ribbed with gilt motifs, gilt edges, inner frame with 7 gilt fillets (E. Maylander rel. dor.). I: 210 ff.- II. 210 ff., mounted on straw laid paper. The text, close to its definitive state, contains some erasures, additions, or hesitation marks. The title page bears the first title chosen by Pierre Louÿs: " L'Esclavage ", then a second page, under the title " Aphrodite. Moeurs antiques ", indicates the layout of the text for publication in volume. The pages by Pierre Louÿs (laid paper with the " Joynson superfine " watermark, 25 x 20 cm) are written on one side only with blue-violet, brown or black ink. The set is signed several times (by Louÿs and another), bears the marks of the prote in blue pencil and typographical indications in ink. The leaves are numbered (the preface with a separate numbering), with some errors. "Shouting for the masterpiece, François Coppé, in the Journal of April 16, 1896, launched Aphrodite and at the same time the Mercure de France. At the age of twenty-six, Pierre Louÿs became a famous man. His debut in the journal was in 1893. A regular visitor to the salons of José-Maria de Heredia and Mallarmé, he frequented the rue de l'Échaudé where he met several of his friends: André Gide, whom he had met at the École alsacienne in 1888, Henri Albert, Nietzsche's introduction to France, and Jean de Tinan. Aphrodite, initially refused by the Écho de Paris and the Revue Blanche, was published as a serial in the Mercure, from August 1895 to January 1896, under the title L'Esclavage (Slavery). Contrary to the habits of the house, the book first appeared in an ordinary edit
