MONTHERLANT, Henry de
Meeting of autograph manuscripts. S. l., [ca. December 1950]. 96 p. on 92 ff. in-4 and in-8 (various dimensions). A collection of 14 autograph manuscripts, 2 of which are signed, about Malatesta. The set includes 92 leaves with 96 manuscript pages, some cut and pasted, most of them written on the back of old typescripts or letters. These pages, abundantly worked on, can be grouped into 14 different sets, 8 of which have a title (details on request). These manuscripts form an important set of reflections around Montherlant Malatesta's play. The play, published in 1946, was first performed on 19 December 1950 at the Théâtre Marigny in Paris, directed by Jean-Louis Barrault, who also played the title role. Montherlant evokes the genesis of his play, its writing, its publication and its reception: "It happens that an author does not see very clearly, when he writes a work, even when he has written it, what makes the originality of this work, what it brings significant and particular. It is the public that will reveal it to him. Such an adventure happened to me with Malatesta. "Further on, he also talks about the interpretation and the scenography chosen by Jean-Louis Barrault: "Barrault feels very well the innocence of Malatesta. He regrets not having brought the scene between Sigismund and Vannella and the arrival of Isotta closer together in the 4th arrondissement. " Stains, paperclip marks, freckles, tears and marginal lacks.
