MONTHERLANT, Henry de
Autograph manuscript. S. l., [ca. 1950-1951]. 7 p. in-4 and in-8 (various sizes). Autograph manuscript for his collection of stories España Sagrada. This working manuscript, abundantly erased and corrected, is written on the spine of leaves torn from a book or on the spine of typewritten sheets. Montherlant, who never hid his fascination for bullfighting, draws here a bitter portrait of the Dax arenas: "The Dax arenas are thermal arenas. Situated in the middle of a thermal park, with high trees: the least Spanish scenery there is. White but blackened from place to place by the rainwater that has dripped on them [...] they remind us of Luna Park. Part of the paths of the park surrounding it are sanded with a golden sand color, just like the sand in the bullring of Seville. ...] Why aren't the arenas in Dax sanded with this sand? " This text will be published, with some variations, in the collection España Sagrada in 1951. Traces of folds, ink stains, old adhesive repairs, marginal tears.
