Picabia, Francis
Autograph manuscript. S. l., [circa 1950]. 2 booklets of 14 and 17 ff. in-8 (21.6 x 17.2 cm), bound. Autograph manuscript entitled "Compréhension de l'illusion Joseph et Marie". Working manuscript, abundantly crossed out and corrected, of this humorous, surrealist and blasphemous tale. Mary and Joseph cross paths with Pierre de Massot and Paul Verlaine at the Paris Fair or at the Folies Bergères: "She shrugged and shuddered because the voice of the angel of the Last Judgement in a loudspeaker said: If you want to be happy, go and see the Folies Bergères in France [...]. Deep down Joseph was in love with the woman of the Paris Fair, whom he found beautiful and with whom he wanted to sleep. " This tale is in the same vein as Jesus Christ Rastaquouère, which Picabia published in 1920. PROVENANCE: Sale Paris, Ader, December 13, 2012, lot 74. Uncut leaves, stains, scorched margins.
