PROUST, Marcel - Lot 466
PROUST, Marcel Autograph letter signed. S. l., [ca. 1917-1918]. 8 p. on 2 double ff. in-8 (18.1 x 13.4 cm). Autograph letter signed to Clément de Maugny. Marcel Proust evokes the drawing talents of Rita, the wife of Clément de Maugny: "I knew that Madame de Maugny was a delightful woman but I did not know that she was a great artist. This gap has now been filled. [...] I beg you to place at Madame de Maugny's feet all my admiration. I had not yet seen (nor received) these masterpieces, when I asked Reynaldo, as the most helpful of my friends, to take care of the matter. He promised me that he would and believes he has excellent support. He told me the name of a cartoonist, apparently an illustrious one, but that I can't remember. "Proust is referring here to Gus Bofa. Clément de Maugny, very proud of his wife's talent, had asked his friend Marcel Proust to find him a publisher. Rita de Maugny served as a nurse during the Great War, and her experience gave her material for a book of cartoons, entitled Au Royaume du Bistouri (1919), for which Proust wrote the Preface. PROVENANCE: Sale Paris, Brissonneau, October 14, 2009, lot 134. Some freckles and stains.
