PROUST, Marcel
Autograph letter signed. S. l. n. d. 4 p. on 1 double f. in-8 (18,1 x 13,6 cm). Autograph letter signed to Clément de Maugny. Proust agrees to help him to find "a situation in Paris". He proposes to "ask my faithful friend Reynaldo to see (although he has tried unsuccessfully for some friends of his, but one cannot necessarily conclude from a failure that everything will fail); but the misfortune of the times makes him waste his strength and his talent to musically direct the Casino-Théâtre de Cannes, as he does now every winter. He left without saying goodbye to me and I don't think he'll be back before April or May. What kind of situation would you like? " Proust nostalgically concludes by evoking their happy memories of youth: "I thank you for your praise, but if I have a little bit of success, at least in England and America, I don't feel the sweetness of living in constant suffering that sometimes illuminates like a rose reflection on the snow, the sunset near the Mont Blanc where I used to go looking for you in the evening with such joy. " It was in Evian, in 1899, that Marcel Proust and Clément de Maugny became friends. This youthful friendship lasted, through assiduous correspondence, until Proust's death. PROVENANCE: Sale Paris, Brissonneau, 14 October 2009, lot 146. Some freckles.
