[PROUST, Marcel].- SCHIFF, Violet. Autographed and typed signed letters. Paddington, 1922-1949. 34 p. on 18 ff. in-8 and in- 12 (various sizes), 13 envelopes, 2 cards. A collection of 15 autograph and 3 typewritten letters, all signed, to Céleste Albaret. Rich English worldly patrons, Violet and Sidney Schiff, very admiring of Marcel Proust's work, became his close friends and were very affected by his death, as these letters to Céleste Albaret, Marcel Proust's faithful governess, testify. In a letter dated November 20, 1922, Violet Schiff recalls the death of Marcel Proust, which had occurred two days earlier: "Impossible to tell you how unhappy we are. We have always wanted to believe that he was not as ill as he seemed. But alas, that was not true. You know that for us he was a divine being. We think of you and your great devotion and affection for him, and how you must have suffered. " A few months later: " Now I'm slowly reading the translation we're slowly making of 'In the shade..." It makes us live with him in an astonishing way - and now he seems more alive than ever to me because of his works. "(March 16, 1923.) Violet Schiff also evokes the special relationship that had developed between Proust and Celeste. "What an immense privilege for you to have spent these years always at the side of this divine and unique being. And certainly you deserved it because nobody like him knew the true value of people and it is you alone that he chose to be always close to him. For us he was sublime and everything he could do or say was perfect" (December 1, 1922); "I add a little word to tell you that you must try to be worthy of having been the companion of the wonderful being that Marcel Proust was. "(December 17, 1923.) Enclosed is: - A typed letter signed by Daniel Waley, Curator of the Manuscript Department of the British Library. - Set of documents relating to the Mante Proust family: card from Suzie Proust to Céleste Alb
