RILKE, Rainer Maria
Autograph letter signed. Leipzig, January 23, 1910. 3 p. pet. in-8 (18.1 x 13.6 cm) in a bifolium of linen paper. Autograph letter signed from Rilke to Harry Clemens Ulrich von Kessler (Graf Kessler). It evokes his only novel, published in 1910, the Cahiers de Malte Laurids Brigge, to which he must give priority. Being busy with the completion of the work, he declines the invitation of his friend Kessler to come to Weimar. He is still held back here by the dictation of his manuscript. The day before he was in Iena, where he was able, too briefly, to see their mutual friend Hélène von Nostitz and her husband before they left for Weimar by train. Harry Kessler, a patron of the arts, museum director and peace activist, supported Rilke and made him speak at conferences for the various institutions for which he was responsible. He also supported the founding of the publishing house Insel Verlag in 1904. Full transcript on request. Very slight traces of creasing and crumpling.
