SAINT EXUPÉRY, Antoine de
Autograph manuscript. [circa 1939-1940]. 6 ff., autograph foliotation. Manuscript titled on the fourth page "The Truth", in which Saint Exupéry reflects on the ambiguous links that exist between the simplification of thought and the expression of truth, especially in the face of historical events and in the writing of History. "Hitler's drama is not that I can say why the Germans want to unite, why the bastard must be strong, but why - if I am twice the size of my neighbour - I have no right to crush him. Why (I have examples). Now it is obvious that we have lived in uneasiness and that National Socialism has sought to purge this uneasiness - and has purged it, but where am I going to house another need that I need? Ultimately the arbitrariness of the state. It is the arbitrariness of the state that prevents me from murder. Hitler's genius was to mobilize .... Thus is shaken the kingdom that protected the individual by allowing him to be. Only the common measure has been taken from it. He is brought back to the anthill. There is no longer the individual but the group. " In another part of his text, Saint Exupéry evokes the wisdom of a "kaid dispensing justice" in an old farm in Morocco, which could be compared to the original title of the Citadel: "The Kaid or Berber Lord". Several passages from this beautiful text are taken up in the Morale of the Slope, written in late 1939-early 1940. PROVENANCE: Anonymous sale, lot 375 (Paris, 16 May 2012). Tears with small lacks at the place of the paper clip, marginal tears without missing, small light spots.
