SEGALEN, Victor
Corrected proofs signed by Stèles. Circa 1912. More than 200 ff. in 1 vol. in-4 narrow (29.1 x 14.1 cm), publisher's binding, ais and yellow silk ties, ideograms engraved on the first cover. Corrected proofs of the original edition of Stèles. This model of Ségalen's most famous collection is enriched with an autograph shipment signed to his wife Yvonne Hébert, dated March 25, 1912 in Beijing. It is composed of several versions of the texts, sometimes abundantly corrected, printed on different papers and often assembled in leporello, sometimes in sheets, as well as several cover and label essays. It is adorned with five calligraphy calligraphs by Master Li, 19 woodcuts of ideograms and several essays of the various seals in red ink. Segalen conceived the idea of this collection of "short and hard proses" (letter to Debussy, January 6, 1911) in 1910, on his return from an expedition to central China, in the company of his friend Auguste Gilbert de Voisins. Printed on 13 August 1912 in Beijing on the presses of the Lazarist mission of the Pei-t'ang, this first edition comprises 281 copies, 200 on European vellum and 81 on Korean paper - a symbolic edition corresponding to the number of slabs on the terrace of the Temple of Heaven -, "not for sale" and intended for family and friends, as well as personalities such as Claudel (dedicatee of the work), Debussy, Gide or Loti. It also included 2 copies on paper from China, one on paper from Japan, and one of pass. As the manuscript of this work is preserved by the BnF, this copy is one of the last, if not the last, remaining privately owned testimony to the creative process for this unique work of French literature. BIBLIOGRAPHY: In French in the text, 340. Stains, wet spots, traces of folding, small marginal tears, traces of glue, some burnished ff.
