VALERY, Paul
Autograph manuscript. S. l., [ca. 1942]. In-8 (21.9 x 17.3 cm), paperback, grey cover illustrated with a rooster, author's name in graphite, autograph title in black ink on the first cover plate, red half-maroquin folder and case, gilt title in length. 14 p. x 8 ff. Autograph manuscript entitled "Préface pour Phèdre - Notes. " The manuscript is illustrated with 5 large ink drawings enhanced with watercolour, 8 black ink sketches and a lead pencil drawing. Valéry's manuscript sheds light on his working method. He notes his reflections in the form of short sentences as key ideas, accompanied by a few formulas and sketches that allow him to visualize his thoughts and will serve as a basis for his text: "Beauty. Genital strength. Energy of Eros", "The longer the verse, the more it marks the will. "Two things strike in Phaedra: She and the beauty of the verses. " These notes were intended as a preface to a deluxe edition of Racine's Phèdre published by the Bibliophiles franco-suisses. The work appeared in 1942, illustrated with 28 burins by Richard Brunck de Freundeck, with a Prelude by Paul Valéry. Corners of the case rubbed, stains, traces of folds at the corners of the leaves.
