GIONO Jean (1895-1970)
On Bernard BUFFET, autograph manuscript signed S.d., 2 pages in-4 in ink on paper, extremely tight handwriting, title in red strikethrough. He surprised the moment when the spirit no longer becomes flesh, when passion devours everything, when there is no longer any attitude; the moment when the character is no longer in representation. What some call: sad, but which is the expression of a pure and simple truth of a fact, of a state of mind [...] I have a vision of the world that could be said to be sober and elegant (which the Japanese have understood very well). I only need its shape [...] I see enough. I enjoy without mixing reports where I'm free to put the dose myself [...] I've wanted to steal Bernard Buffet's paintings a hundred times. There is a port in La Rochelle where everything is expressed by this faculty of suggestion, by this elegant and sober art that solicits the most secret of my sensations with the utmost courtesy [...]". Giono widens his subject to the relationship between literary and artistic creation, also evoking Chateaubriand, Hugo, Stendhal, Picasso, Renoir, Millet, African and pre-Columbian arts, etc. This critical essay on Bernard Buffet appeared as a preface to the catalogue of the painter's exhibition held at the Galerie Lucien Blanc in Aix-en-
